How to stop pregnancy belly itching| bump balm and other solutions

There aren’t many Mums to be that I know who’ve not experienced the terrible belly itch during pregnancy.

Itching is common in pregnancy. Usually, it’s thought to be caused by raised levels of certain chemicals in the blood, such as hormones. Later, as your bump grows, the skin of your tummy (abdomen) is stretched and this may also feel itchy.

Luckily this terrible itchiness passes once your baby is born, but at the time, it can be almost unbearable!

I once remember being in a meeting with clients, feeling that desperate urge to pull my top up and scratch away and not be able to focus on anything else because the urge was so strong! I dread to think what my clients thought as I wriggled uncomfortably in my chair, trying the stem the itching, desperate for a break so that I could rub some balm into my stretching skin!

So what can we do about the dreaded itch?

Mild itching

Wearing loose clothing may help prevent itching, as your clothes are less likely to rub against your skin and cause irritation.

You may also want to avoid synthetic materials and opt for natural ones, such as cotton, instead. These are “breathable” and allow the air to circulate close to your skin. You may find generally you become more sweaty and so natural fabrics are best.

You may find having a cool bath or applying a bump balm, like Mama Jewels Baby and Bump balm will really help soothe the itching. Our bump balm is specially formulated for both bumps and babies to provide moisture and nourishment to skin in need of TLC. Even the most sensitive little skins will be soothed! Perfect for bumps, scratches, dry patches and everything in between, this healing balm will help. This unique formula contains Shea Butter and Almond Oil for extra skin protection and it’s a winner for itchy pregnancy skin!

Some women find that products with strong perfumes can irritate their skin, so you could try using unperfumed lotion or soap just for the duration of pregnancy. Hormone levels are all over the place, I actually found strongly perfumed skincare products made me feel nauseous.

Mild itching is not usually harmful to you or your baby, but it can sometimes be a sign of a more serious condition, particularly if you notice it more in the evenings or at night. If this happens, contact your midwife immediately as it could be a sign of a serious liver issue known as Intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy (ICP) is a potentially serious liver disorder that can develop in pregnancy.
